Hard water minerals deposits are the main reason for rust stains on ceramic sinks and other bathroom fixtures, but rusty galvanized iron water pipes leaking in the sink are also responsible for those nasty and unappealing orange stains. The problem isn’t their appearance if they would’ve been removed easily. But these stubborn orange stains are incredible difficult to remove. However, if you use the right products, rust stains on bathroom fixtures wouldn’t be such a nuisance when it comes to their removal.
Of course, there are a lot of products on the market that you can use to remove rust stains on ceramic sink easily, but most of them are toxic. And if you love green cleaning like I do, you can rely on my natural methods to remove those disgusting orange stains on ceramic bathroom fixtures.
Supplies You’ll Need:
- Pumice scouring stick
- White vinegar
- Spray bottle
- Rubber gloves
- Borax
- Cloth
- Bowl
First thing first: you’ll have to wet the pumice stick and rub it back and forth over the rust stains on ceramic sink. The wet pumice will dissolve to form a paste as you scrub it against the sink. Now, rub the paste into the rusted areas with the pumice scouring stick until they are removed. Rinse all of the pumice paste out of the sink.
The next move is to use white vinegar:
- Plug the sink and spray it with white vinegar.
- Let the vinegar sit in the sink for 30 minutes to remove the rust stains.
- Rinse out the sink to remove the white vinegar.
This method should work, but in case it doesn’t, you should bring on the heavy artillery:
- Put on rubber gloves. Mix 2 tablespoons borax with 2 cups warm water in a bowl.
- Apply the borax solution to the rusted areas of the sink with a clean cloth.
- Let the borax solution sit for 12 hours in the sink. Rinse out the sink with cold water to remove any residue left by the borax solution.
Important! Do not use bleach or cleansers that contain bleach to remove rust stains from porcelain sinks, as the chlorine chemically reacts with iron and might make rust stains worse than they already are.
