When your kid has motion sickness, vomit happens! I am one of those moms that frequently clean up her daughter’s vomit from car seats. Everything happens in the blink of an eye – now she turns yellow, green she releases an awkward sound, and the next moment there’s vomit everywhere. That’s the moment when you just wanted to walk your kid to the kindergarten.

The funny thing is that vomit can easily be cleaned from any surface, including car seats, but vomit smell persists for months. Since I can’t change my car every time I take Emma for a ride, I had to come up with a solution in cleaning up vomit and getting rid of that stinky vomit odor from my car.
So, first thing first: clean up the vomit and buckle up with some materials, because you will need them:
- Dust mask
- Garbage bag
- Paper towels
- Butter knife
- Rubber gloves
Cleaning process:
It may seem too much to wear a mask and gloves, but believe…it’s disgusting. And the odor is unbearable that makes you throw up instantly.
Now, use those paper towels to remove as much vomit as you can. If there are some resides left, you can use the butter knife to scrape well the car seat. Put it all in the garbage bag. Use more paper towels to blot well the moisture.
Now that the vomit is gone, it’s time for some more cleaning so, grab the necessary materials and start rubbing:
- Baking soda
- 1 teaspoon of dish soap
- 1 cup of vinegar
- 1 gallon of hot water
- Sponge
- More paper towels
So, mix the vinegar, dish soap and water in recipient such as bucket or small basin. Dip the sponge in this cleaning solution and start scrubbing the vomit away from the car seats. Insist on rubbing to remove the vomit stain. When the stain is gone, blot up the cleaning solution with paper towels then sprinkle 2 fingers thick layer of baking soda over the stain. Leave the baking soda sit for a several hours (or overnight) to absorb the moisture and smell. Then you can vacuum the baking powder.
It’s advisable to get a new car deodorizer or an automotive essential oil diffuser to over the vomit smell better.
