Fruit flies or “drunken flies” like my grandmother used to call it, are extremely bothering when they invade your home. They tend to look for places with high humidity, so you will find them in the bathroom and in the kitchen. They feed with fungi on fruits, and that’s why they are so attracted to the fruit basket.

No matter the origins of these little insects, buzzing around your food and house is the most annoying thing they can do, and you have to send them away, to play outside.

Ammonia

As I said before, fruit flies hide and multiply in high humidity areas, most often in the sink (I found them in the kitchen sink). But if you pour 1 cup of ammonia on the kitchen drain, and make sure that you ventilate well the room, you will get rid of them easily.

When using this remedy, please, wear a protection mask not to inhale the ammonia vapors.

Apple vinegar

If you want to try the non-chemical way, just heat some apple vinegar and pour it to the kitchen drain.

But you can prepare an apple vinegar trap for fruit flies, as it follows:

  • pour apple vinegar in a glass and put a paper or plastic funnel over it. Fruit flies will enter the glass to drink the magic potion and they won’t be able to get out.

Red wine

Like humans, fruit flies can get drunk. Just put a glass with red wine next to the kitchen sink and the next day you’ll see how the fruit flies will float in the wine.

Dish soap and vinegar

One of the most effective traps to catch fruit flies is to mix in a bowl, 2-3 tablespoons of dish soap with 1 tablespoon of vinegar. Cover the bowl with tin foil and make some small holes in it with a toothpick. The fruit flies will be attracted to the smell of vinegar, and the dishwashing detergent will kill them.

Fly paper

This sticky paper isn’t useful only to catch flies, but it’s also great in catching fruit flies. So, follow the instruction on the fly sticky paper and catch those annoying fruit flies.
